Fishtown streets and sidewalks
Fishtown is one of the River Wards, roughly the triangle formed by the Delaware River, Front Street and York Street. A long-time working-class neighborhood, it has gentrified rapidly since the 2000s, so its blocks mix older rowhomes with new construction.
What we hear about in Fishtown
- Sidewalk damaged by construction next door: trucks, dumpsters and excavators
- Old slabs that now sit lower than a neighbor’s new pour
- Curb cuts and driveways added by new projects
- Utility trenches patched unevenly across the sidewalk
What to know before you fix it
If a neighbor’s project damaged your sidewalk, photograph it before and after and raise it with the builder; who pays is between you and them. If you’re rebuilding to match a new neighbor, a licensed curb setter will get lines and grades from the district surveyor so the slabs and curb line up. Before any digging, contractors must call PA One Call (811).
The rules are the same citywide
In every Philadelphia neighborhood, the property owner is responsible for the sidewalk and curb. Work in the right-of-way needs a Curb and Footway Permit pulled by a contractor with a Curb Setter License. If an owner ignores a Streets Department notice, the City can do the work and bill them.
