Manayunk & Roxborough streets and sidewalks
Manayunk sits on the steep east bank of the Schuylkill, where one of the first canals begun in the US was built. Rowhouses climb the hillsides from Main Street. The Historical Commission designated Main Street Manayunk in 1984, and also lists Ridge Avenue Roxborough (2018) and Victorian Roxborough (2022).
What we hear about in Manayunk & Roxborough
- Sidewalks with built-in steps on steep blocks
- Retaining walls holding up sidewalks and yards
- Slabs undermined by stormwater running downhill
- Flood damage near Main Street and the river
What to know before you fix it
On steep blocks, check that the curb is high enough to keep stormwater in the gutter. The City’s curb reveal standard is 4 to 8 inches. After Hurricane Ida in September 2021, floodwaters shut down Manayunk’s Main Street, so sidewalks near the river can be undermined. Retaining walls are private property, with costs shared by owners who have deed rights.
The rules are the same citywide
In every Philadelphia neighborhood, the property owner is responsible for the sidewalk and curb. Work in the right-of-way needs a Curb and Footway Permit pulled by a contractor with a Curb Setter License. If an owner ignores a Streets Department notice, the City can do the work and bill them.
